At 1st Translations.com, we provide both translation services and Interpreting services; try not to get confused between these two disciplines. The two professions are very different and require unique and finely tuned skills. A good interpreter may not necessarily excel as a translator and vice versa. This is why we assign only experienced interpreters to your projects so you are assured of having professional services provided to you.
Of course there are differences between these two professions, they are outlined below.
Initially one would think there is little distinction in these two language specialties but they would be wrong. Specifically a translator specializes in translating the written word and an Interpreter the spoken word. Dissimilarities arise with the skill sets and intangibles of each discipline. Deadlines are common with document translations and a translator will presumably have time to proof their work, have access to resources with the time to utilize them and check for accuracy.
Interpreting is immediate with the pressure that comes from live language translation. There are no unscheduled rest periods, only intense pressure, and focused concentration. Excellent listening skills are mandatory and they must clearly and concisely as possible speak both languages of the conversation. There is not time to double check phrases and pronunciation. Interpreters must think quickly on the fly and be cool under pressure.
Most translators will work in their indigenous language so as to ensure they properly convert not only language text but also understand the localized nuances and cultural context of what it is they are translating. Working with written information from one language and accurately converting it to another so it can be completely understood by a non-native reader is the objective of translation.
Simultaneous interpreting and Consecutive interpreting are the central forms of language interpreting.
Consecutive interpreting
This form of Interpretation is common in courtrooms and boardrooms when a professional interpreter acts as a speech connection between parties in a live atmosphere. A person will speak a few sentences, the interpreter will translate the words, and the speaker will continue followed again by the interpreter and so forth. It helps to have excellent recall for this form of interpreting.
Simultaneous interpreting
This form of interpretation occurs when an interpreter sits in a booth and speaks into a microphone like what you would see at the United Nations or other political forums. Attention and focus are paramount for these interpreters since they must listen closely and immediately translate what they are hearing. The pressure is intense and this type of interpreting is usually accomplished in teams to allow for frequent breaks between the interpreters.
